Jodhpur once the capital of the Marwar state is set at the edge of the Thar desert which echoes the tales of antiquity in the emptiness of the desert. It was founded in 1459 AD by Rao Jodha-chief of the Rathore clan of Rajputs who claimed to be descendants of Rama - the epic hero of the Ramayana.

Jodhpur the major trade Centre of the 16th century A.D is now the second largest city of Rajasthan. The city is encompassed by a high wall which is 10 km long with 8 gates and innumerable bastions.

Mehrangarh Fort, Jodhpur
Situated on a steep hill, mehrangarh fort is one of the largest in india. The beauty and the grandeur of numerous palaces in the fort narrates a saga of hard sandstones yielding to the chisels of skilled jodhpuri sculptures. Mehrangarh fort houses a beautiful museum inside the fort. .




Umaid Bhawan Palace, Jodhpur
This magnificent palace was built keeping in mind a noble purpose. During those the country was struck with famine, so to give employment to the population the palace was constructed under the famine relief project. This opulent edifice in sandstone is still the residence of the former rulers with a part of it running as hotel and remaining part as a museum. The stone that has been used has a special feature that it doesn't weathered. Now some portion of the palace have been converted into a hotel and a museum.

Jaswant Thada, Jodhpur
The 19th century royal cenotaph wass built in white marble in commemoration of maharaja jaswant singh. Some rare portraits of the rulers of jodhpur are also displayed here.

Air: Jodhpur has its own airport and regular flight services connect the city with other major cities in and around Rajasthan.

Rail: The city is also well connected by the railway lines and trains are available for other major cities in the country from here. The 'Palace on Wheels' also visits this city of royal splendor.

Road: The state transport has bus services from other cities of the state and some services are interstate too.
